They say that the devil is in the detail and that is no doubt true, but I think the delight is also in the detail. I like to make little delighting surprises for myself, and one of the places that I do that is in my home. Here’s the very nice thing: it takes so little to make these little delights.
When I walk into my bedroom I get a delighful little surprise at this arrangement. The water painting was done by my father and is of a favourite holiday place when we were kids. The photograph is one of my most favourite of my daughter when she was little. The flowers are gleaned from a familiar place. There is a little glass angel, although you can’t really see it in the pic, and this was a present from friends of mine. The combination gives me an absurdly happy little jolt.
I think that sometimes we imagine that it is only possible to be happy after we have done some big thing first – managed to look like an airbrushed celeb, suffered, paid lots of money, achieved some impossible task – whatever. The truth of it is though, that happiness comes to us through quite little things. Anyone can pick a flower and put it in a jar. All you have to do is notice its beauty. How delightful!
